Development, Security, and Cooperation is a unit of the Policy and Global Affairs Division. Building on long experience and special knowledge of the technical and policy challenges facing developing, transitional, and advanced industrial societies, this division concentrates on three areas:

  • Continuing and expanding traditional work in international development, such as its long-standing program on tropical resources, joint studies of population and land use issues with China and India, and newer joint studies of energy issues and fuel use.
  • Maintaining programs of bilateral cooperation in science and technology issues, such as studies of technology competitiveness and commercialization, Russian and U.S. efforts in the area of counterterrorism cooperation, promotion of cooperation between American scientists and those scientists who worked in the former Soviet Union’s biological weapons program (specifically promoting ties with scientists in the early stages of their careers through project development and travel between the countries), and research grant programs.
  • Building new programs in areas where development and security issues intersect. This effort can be seen in the promotion of scientific cooperation between the Iranian Academy of Sciences, the Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences, and The National Academies, including reciprocal visits of the Academies’ presidents; and in promotion of cooperation through a workshop on enhancing peace in Chechnya through education, held with cooperation of the Russian Academy of Sciences and The National Academies.
