COLLABORATION IN BASIC SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (COBASE)

Mietek Jaroniec of Kent State University and Vladimir Bogillo of the Institute of Surface Chemistry, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, worked together for nearly seven months in 1999. Their efforts were focused on developing a useful model to describe adsorption thermodynamics for ozone-depleting halocarbons, in particular, halomethames, on the mineral constituents of solid atmospheric aerosols and other environmental surfaces. Jaroniec reports that Bogillo had a unique opportunity to familiarize himself with research in the area of heterogeneous chemistry of metal oxides carried out in the Chemistry Department at Kent State as well as in other U.S. research institutions. Through this program, he was able to achieve interesting results that probably could not have been obtained in Ukraine due to the existing economic problems. They plan to continue collaboration and feel that this has been a very fruitful match. Already, one graduate student from Kiev is working with Jaroniec.
