Central Europe and Eurasia Individual Grants Programs
YOUNG INVESTIGATOR PROGRAMS
With support from the U.S. Department of State's Research and Training Program for Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (Title VIII), the National Research Council, which is the operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine, sponsors Young Investigator Programs. Each program consists of a fifteen- to twenty-day sessions in a foreign country for American specialists and an equal number of foreign specialists who have earned his/her Ph.D. or achieved equivalent professional accomplishments within 8 years of their participation.
NRC Young Investigator Programs (YIPs) are based on the premise that scholars make some of their most important professional contributions in the early stages of their careers and that professional relationships established during this period tend to endure for many years. The long term goal of these YIPs is to contribute to the professional development of American experts in areas critical to the welfare and future development of Central Europe and Eurasia as well as other areas of the globe. These YIPs provide participants with an opportunity to advance their professional research interests while gaining unique cross-cultural experience. American teams are selected with an eye to interdisciplinary representation so as to foster an integrated approach to the problems under study. The nature of the program necessitates that each American must be highly motivated and flexible in order to achieve his/her professional goals and to contribute to the entire teams' understanding of the issue.
