Marla Allentuck

Marla received her B.A. in Communications from the American University. She has worked at The National Academies since 1989. She oversees the publication of the Research Opportunity Booklets and the Policies, Practices, and Procedures Manual, and assists with updating the Research Opportunities on the website. In her spare time, she likes to read, go to the movies, root for the Redskins and Nationals, or just relax with her family. mallentuck@nas.edu

Maria Crocco

Maria P Crocco, Supervisor of Operations began at The National Academies as an Office Assistant with the Research Associateship Programs in 1977. She now handles all support documents for applications received during four reviews each year, assists in processing Research Opportunity booklets, oversees website content, and monitors the electronic office mailbox. She received her B.S. degree in Early Childhood Education from the California University of Pennsylvania in 1977. Her outside interests include volunteer work, baking, flea markets, movies, her black labs, and shopping for bargains.

Jane Dell'Amore

Jane Dell’Amore has been on the staff of the National Research Council of the National Academies since 1974. Her first five years were spent in the Office of International Affairs working on the exchange program with the former USSR and its aligned countries. After transferring to the Associateship Programs office in 1979, she assumed the position of Supervisor of Operations, which included overseeing the processing of all applications for Postdoctoral Research Awards. In addition, she has been responsible for promoting the Programs in the scientific community, including coordinating attendance at professional scientific meetings and conferences. With the recent merger of the Research Associateship Programs Office with the Fellowships Office, Ms. Dell’Amore assumed the responsibility for coordinating all publicity and outreach activities for the Ford Fellowship Programs in addition to the Postdoctoral Research Associateship Programs. With the merger, the Associateship Programs has added seven meetings to its list of outreach activities, all of which target minority audiences. Jane is looking forward to the challenge of working with the staff in recruiting more minority applicants to the Programs. In her spare time, Jane enjoys doing volunteer work with the elderly, working out at the gym, and creating beaded jewelry.

Charlie Fink

Charlie Fink joined the National Academies of Science in the spring of 2007. He works in the PGA-Fellowships office designing, developing, and supporting IT systems. He has been designing and developing leading software solutions for over 15 years. He has successfully managed a large number of software projects, including enterprise development, complex data migrations, and decision support systems (DSS). As a project manager, Charlie has also developed and lead client training focused on use and support of custom software systems.

Ray Gamble

Dr. Gamble received his B.A. from Lafayette College and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the Ohio State University and was an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Massachusetts. His began his professional career as a Research Scientist with the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service in 1981 and remained there until 2000. From 1993-2000 he was Laboratory Director of the Parasite Biology and Epidemiology Laboratory located in Beltsville, Maryland, managing research programs in animal disease, public health and food safety. He has over 170 publications in the fields of food safety/zoonotic diseases, parasitic diseases of livestock, disease detection, and vaccine development. Dr. Gamble assumed his present position with the National Research Council in 2000. He remains active in research through collaborative grants with the USDA and university colleagues and serves as an Adjunct Professor in the George Washington School of Medicine.

Barbara Kneebone

Barbara Kneebone has worked with the National Academies since 1994. She began in the Policy and Global Affairs division with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Fellowship program, the primary goal of which is placing international students - from graduating seniors to Ph.D. scientists - at U.S. universities and federal laboratories to study various peaceful applications of atomic energy. She then moved on to work in the associateships programs, providing support to postdoctoral scientists working in U.S. government laboratories such as the U.S. Army Research Office and various centers of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In her current position, she works with the Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship program which administers predoctoral, dissertation, and postdoctoral fellowships. In her spare time, she enjoys all kinds of music, theater, travel, Kung-Fu, and spoiling her two long-haired chihuahuas.

Christine O'Brien

Chris O’Brien has worked at the Fellowships Office of the Policy and Global Affairs Division of the National Academies since the mid-1970’s. She has been involved in the administration of numerous fellowship programs, varying in level from predoctoral through postdoctoral and varying by funding source (public and private). Since 1979, Chris has worked primarily on the Ford Foundation Predoctoral, Dissertation, and Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs. In spring 2006, the most recent cohort of fellowship recipients received their awards, bringing the total of Ford Fellowship awards (administered by the National Academies) to 2500. Chris and Joan Rosenthal were co-founders of the Fellowship Roundtable in 1995.

Margaret Petrochenkov

Margaret "Peggy" Petrochenkov earned her B.A. degree at the University of Colorado and her Master's and Ph.D. degrees in comparative literature at Indiana University, specializing in cultural criticism and literary theory, and is fluent in French and Russian. During tenure at the National Academies, she has been involved in policy, evaluation strategies, selection of review panels, design of fellowship applications, and database management. She is currently one of the organizers of the Fellowship Roundtable, a group that meets twice a year to discuss fellowship program administration. Avocations include choral singing, gardening, and adopting greyhounds.

Joan Rosenthal

Joan received her B.A. in Sociology from the George Washington University. Joan has worked with the National Academies since 1974. She was the program supervisor of the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship Program until the program left the NAS in 1992. She has since become the manager for operations of the Fellowships Office. Joan manages staffing, logistical, and technical activities supporting the Associateship and Fellowship Programs. She oversees management of meeting activities, including venue selection, contract negotiations, and travel. Joan facilitates the flow for all meetings and conferences for all programs. Along with Chris O’Brien, Joan was co-founder of the Fellowship Roundtable in 1995 and it continues to be an ongoing project with over 100 Fellowship Administrators as members. She represents the Fellowship and Associateship programs in various promotional meetings outside of the NAS. She has served on many academy committees and is an officer of the NRC Toastmasters International club.

Suzanne White

Suzanne is currently a Program Associate with the Postdoctoral Research Associateship programs (coordinating the NRL, FHWA, NVESD, and USACE/IWR programs), and Manager/Editor of the Web Board and the Newsletter. She previously worked with the Transportation Research Board, and the Science Education Standards Project, also within the National Research Council of the National Academies. Suzanne has a B.A./Music, University of Wisconsin-Madison; M.A./Music, University of Wales; Certification/Teaching, MCPS, Maryland; Certificate in Theological Studies, Georgetown University.
