Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships

The Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships seek to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

To facilitate this goal the Fellowship grants awards at the Predoctoral, Dissertation and, Postdoctoral levels to students who demonstrate excellence, a commitment to diversity and a desire to enter the professoriate.

The Fellowship makes the following annual awards

Eligibility Requirements

  • All citizens or nationals of the United States regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation.
  • Individuals with evidence of superior academic achievement
  • Individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level,
  • Individuals enrolled in or planning to enroll in an eligible research-based program leading to a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree at a U.S. educational institution, and
  • Individuals who have not earned a doctoral degree at any time, in any field.

Networking and Mentoring

The Conference of Ford Fellows provides valuable opportunities for networking and mentoring. The 2007 Conference of Ford Fellows will be held on October 5 and 6, 2007 in Irvine, CA. The Keynote Speaker this year will be Donna J. Nelson. The Final Agenda is now available. Abstracts from the Presentations by Fellows, the Academic Exchange Sessions and the Poster Session can now be accessed here, as well as Short bios of moderators and speakers.

Directory of Ford Fellows
The Fellowships Office maintains a searchable
Directory of Ford Fellows with contact information for many of the 2,400 current and previous Ford Fellowship awardees. This database assists Fellows in maintaining professional contacts and allows universities and other institutions to conduct job and expertise searches for highly trained and talented academics from diverse backgrounds .

The Ford Fellows Listserv is a networking tool provided to Ford Fellows to communicate ideas, announce milestones reached in their professional career and to post currently available employment opportunities. Participation in the listserv is available to Ford Fellows only. To request access to the listserv please use the link provided in the left margin of the directory page.

Regional Liaisons and Coordinating Officials
A number of former Ford Fellows have now volunteered to serve as
Regional Liaisons. Fellows may contact liaisons in their region if they have any questions, problems, or concerns.

is a tribute to Ford Fellows and their achievements.

Ford Fellows Fund

Through the Ford Fellows Fund, fellows assist the Ford Foundation and the National Research Council in awarding additional fellowships.
