The GDEST Japan - US Workshop on the Future of Sensors and Sensor Systems
A collaborative program between The Science Council of Japan and The National Academies Tsukuba, Japan February 28 – March 2005 The U.S. National Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Science Council of Japan, hosted an international workshop on the Future of Sensors and Sensor Systems on February 28 – March 2, 2005 at the Okura Frontier Conference Center in Tsukuba, Japan. The idea to hold a conference on sensors and sensor networks was conceived a year ago at the Japan-U.S. Workshop on Science and Technology for a Secure and Safe Society. This topic was chosen because of its application in the areas of health, environmental safety and national security. The purpose of the Japan-U.S. Workshop was twofold: to bring together leading scientists to discuss the future direction of the sensors field, and to foster an inter-generational and international dialogue between experts and promising young scientists who are conducting leading-edge research. The impact of these scientific advances on the future of international relations will indirectly inform these discussions, yet the focus will remain on the basic science of the field. Participants for this event included key Japanese and US scientists, practitioners, students, industry leaders and policy makers from among the many facets of the sensors field. The Japanese-American workshop committees brought together both established experts and newcomers who have already made significant contributions to the science of sensors and sensor networks.
