Just as more people are paying attention to the quality of their lives, they also are increasingly concerned about how they may die. So, after releasing a study report on end-of-life care, the IOM produced a consumer-oriented version to help members of the general public focus on the numerous complex issues that face a person dying, the family, and the caregivers. The booklet summarizes what we do and don’t know about end-of-life care -- and what we know but do not adequately apply -- and helps clarify what constitutes good care for the dying. To date, more than 18,000 copies have been distributed by the IOM and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Future materials will focus on end-of-life care challenges for children and their families.
