THE CAMPAIGN FOR THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES
1997-2004
In 1997, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Research Council (NRC) joined together to launch Shaping the Future, the first Academies-wide fundraising initiative in our history. This extraordinary seven-year effort, a true collaboration among the Academies, provided the financial support critical to the continued vitality of our important work, and secured the stability of our role as independent advisors to the nation.
The need for the unbiased, objective counsel the Academies provide has never been greater. The success of Shaping the Future will allow us to keep pace with unprecedented developments in the fields of science, medicine and technology. Our capacity to evolve in response to the challenges of the modern world means that we are achieving more today than ever before in our history. As the following pages will attest, we have broadened the scope of our work across the boundaries of scientific discipline, extended our outreach to benefit a wider community, and marshaled our members’ considerable talents and skill to address some of the most important challenges facing humankind.
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our members, and combined with contributions from a host of individual and corporate sponsors, Shaping the Future surpassed its ambitious goal of $300 million. The campaign generated $332 million in new resources – funds that will help the Academies to be more proactive and leverage our unique skills more effectively.
The magnificent response to the Shaping the Future campaign demonstrates the value that our members and the friends of the National Academies place on the work the Academies perform for the nation. The Final Report on Shaping the Future, the Campaign for the National Academies, describes many of the programs and initiatives made possible through private contributions, and presents an exhaustive list of donors whose gifts “have resulted in greater service for the public good.”
