Ending Neglect: The Elimination of Tuberculosis in the United States
Tuberculosis began to recede from public consciousness in the 1960s, and was virtually ignored as a public health threat until its resurgence in the mid-1980s along with the first treatment-resistant strains. The subsequent increase in TB control activities brought the number of new and existing cases to an all-time low.

In May 2000, the IOM report Ending Neglect asked whether our nation will permit another cycle of neglect or take decisive action to eliminate TB. It offered an action plan for eliminating tuberculosis in the United States, detailing a number of intertwined steps involving all levels of government and the private sector. To communicate the action plan to federal, state, and local policymakers and public health officials, IOM developed multiple products from the original report, including an 8-page brochure and 10-minute video distributed in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the American Lung Association.
