NAE ANNUAL FUND
ENERGY SYSTEMS AND ENERGY POLICY
The resurgence of crude oil prices. The California electricity crisis. The White House’s domestic energy initiatives. These events raise far-reaching and complex questions about long-term U.S. energy policy and opportunities for new types of energy systems. Those questions include --
- Will new technologies provide effective options if global climate change concerns require significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector?
- How can state governments ensure the reliability of electricity supply and transmission under electric utility restructuring?
- What place will domestic natural gas, hydrogen, clean-coal technologies, and nuclear generation play in the future U.S. energy infrastructure?
- How does the nation transition to new sources from the current ubiquitous infrastructures for energy conversion, delivery, and use?
The Academy is uniquely positioned to provide leadership, objective information, and authoritative guidance to policymakers, industry leaders, and policy advocates addressing these important and contentious energy-policy issues. In doing so, the NAE will focus on mid- and long-term solutions, particularly those initiatives with potential to overcome barriers and establish new approaches for serving the nation’s energy needs.
The first step in that process is a series of Academy-sponsored workshops and technical symposia that will prioritize current and emerging problems, barriers, and data gaps, and identify specific issues that merit targeted studies. Those sessions will draw on an array of expertise and perspectives -- including scientists, engineers, technologists, environmentalists, social scientists, federal, state, and local agency representatives, energy-producing and energy-consuming industries, and academia.
