NAE ANNUAL FUND
ENGINEERING AND THE SERVICE ECONOMY
The United States is the global leader in service industries, both technologically and economically, and the sector will be a foundation for economic growth. But the service sector faces enormous and pressing challenges -- from electronic commerce and the Internet, for example.
To harness the sector’s full potential, government, industry, and academic leaders must better understand the nature of service sector innovation, the effective use of technology in services industries, and the relationship of technology-based innovation to value-creation at all levels of economic activity. Thus the NAE has undertaken a multi-year program on Engineering in the Service Economy.
The program’s initial focus is the health care delivery system -- which could greatly benefit from systems engineering and advanced engineering production techniques. Through workshops and other activities, health care researchers, administrators, and practitioners are collaborating with professionals in systems engineering, operations research, and associated fields to consider how advances in engineering and related fields may be used to transform health care delivery at the regional, institutional, and individual levels.
Additional information on the Engineering in the Service Economy program is available at www.nae.edu under NAE Programs. Use your browser’s Back button to return to this page.
