ENGINEERING EDUCATION

The engineering enterprise faces declining enrollments in engineering schools and the concomitant need to revitalize the teaching of engineering to keep pace with the enterprise’s own rate of evolution. A system of engineering education must be developed that is as dynamic and complex as the professional engineering environment itself. Such a system must offer developmental experiences that prepare students for the professional realities of their future careers; and it must communicate a unifying vision of the capacities and responsibilities of the enterprise and its individual practitioners.

To those ends, the NAE established the Committee on Engineering Education (CEE) in 1999. The CEE seeks to redefine conventional thinking and existing practice, and notable among its activities are initiatives that examine opportunities for reform and renewal in the areas of Curriculum, Pedagogy, and Institutional Structure. The initial activities of the CEE will explore topics such as --

  • the work and scope of engineering in the year 2020, and near-term implications for today’s engineering education institutions;
  • the impact of evolving fields such as information technology and biotechnology on curriculum, delivery, and required workforce skills;
  • applying advances in the science of learning to improve educational goals, processes, and techniques.

The Committee’s work will be complemented by the newly established Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education, which will recognize and help disseminate new and revitalized approaches to engineering education. The Gordon Prize, established by Academy member Bernard Gordon through a gift of stock valued at $10 million, will be awarded for the first time in February 2002.

Additional information on the Academy’s initiatives in Engineering Education is available at www.nae.edu under NAE Programs. Information on the Gordon Prize is available at www.nae.edu/awards. Use your browser’s Back button to return to this page.
