IOM ANNUAL FUND
Looking Ahead
In the coming year, the IOM will also be working on an array of new communication strategies and products on topics such as:

Public Health in the 21st Century: The project on Assuring the Health of the Public in the 21st Century aims to describe a new, more inclusive framework for assuring population-level health -- a framework that can be effectively communicated to and acted upon by diverse communities. Alternative versions of the study report will be written for clinicians and public health professionals, highlighting the places of clinical medicine and public health practice, respectively, in that framework.
Adult and Adolescent Suicide: The study on Pathophysiology and Prevention of Adult and Adolescent Suicide covers the state of the science, gaps in our knowledge, strategies for prevention, and research designs for the study of suicide. From this report, the IOM intends to develop alternate versions for practicing mental health professionals and the lay public

Enhancing Health Care Quality: In March 2001, the IOM released Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, calling for fundamental change in the health care system. To build on its innovative work on health care quality, the IOM is planning several stakeholder meetings where work will begin on translating the strategic direction and framework presented in the report into an operational plan.
Emerging Infections: Based on the IOM report on the public health challenges of emerging infections, the National Academy Press has developed the book Secret Agents: The Menace of Emerging Infections. Targeting general readers of science and other works of nonfiction, it will be published in early 2002.

Early Childhood Development: The Board on Children, Youth, and Families and National Academy Press are adapting the recent landmark study, From Neurons to Neighborhoods: The Science of Early Childhood Development, into a popular book that provides practical recommendations for parents, educators, childcare providers, and business and community leaders. It will be published in late 2002
