As science and technology began to play ever-increasing roles in national priorities and public life, the National Academy of Sciences, signed into being in 1863, eventually expanded to include the National Research Council in 1916, the National Academy of Engineering in 1964, and the Institute of Medicine in 1970.
Known collectively as the National Academies, this non-profit, non-partisan institution is a trusted source for unbiased, sound advice on many of the most pressing challenges facing our nation.
