A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTS
The National Academies believe that the U.S. science, engineering, and medical enterprises have the responsibility to help address the most pressing issues and challenges facing America as a nation as well as each American citizen. We firmly believe that:
Advances in science, engineering, and medicine continue to be the primary catalysts for the United States' astonishing prosperity and quality of life.
More knowledge -- broadly and deeply held by our citizens -- will be essential if we are to manage the complex issues that arise from quickly advancing technologies.
The U.S. science, engineering, and medical communities can help spread prosperity and democracy around the world by building bridges to international colleagues.
For nearly 140 years, the National Academies have served a unique role for American government and society -- as expert, objective advisers on the most pressing issues raised by the pursuit and application of knowledge in science, engineering, and medicine.
Our country's need for the National Academies has never been greater, and the Academies' need for support provided by individuals, philanthropies, and corporations has grown concomitantly. A dollar contributed to the Academies is a dollar wisely and productively invested in the nation's future -- a contribution that will become part of our children's collective inheritance.
