State Programs Can Reduce Tobacco Use

Tobacco is the nation’s leading health threat, and several IOM reports have helped shape public opinion and national policy regarding efforts to curtail its use.

A recent National Cancer Policy Board report on tobacco control programs -- written with state legislators as the primary audience -- calls for strengthening federal regulation of the design and composition of tobacco products, conducting research to determine which tobacco control measures are most effective, and eliminating government policies that contribute to increased smoking in other countries.

Approximately 3,000 copies of State Programs Can Reduce Tobacco Use have been printed for distribution via a targeted mailing list developed in collaboration with the National Conference of State Legislators, the National Governor’s Association, the National Association of City and County Health Officers, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officers, the American Cancer Society, and two tobacco control advocacy organizations.

The report and an expanded website about tobacco harm reduction are available on-line.
