The Need for a Campaign
As the roles of science, engineering, and medicine in society increase, the National Academies seek to expand their mission beyond that laid out in the original 1863 charter. Achieving that broader mission will depend on developing private, independent sources of support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other philanthropies. The Campaign will enable the
National Academies to :

- More broadly disseminate reports, by providing the funding for lay versions, translations, and increased print runs
- Initiate projects that are important to our nation but do not have governmental sponsorship
- Guide the development of science by helping to set funding priorities, analyze research strategies, and convene leading researchers
