Mary Jane West-Eberhard, CHR Vice Chair

Member Mary Jane West EberhardMary Jane West-Eberhard is Senior Scientist Emerita with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, based at the Escuela de Biología at the University of Costa Rica.  She is a member of the National Academy of Science, the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (Italy), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Academy of Sciences of Costa Rica. Dr. West-Eberhard graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in 1963 and a Ph.D. in 1967 followed by a post-doctoral appointment at Harvard University. She served as President of the Society for the Study of Evolution (1991); received the Sewell Wright Award of the American Society of Naturalists (2003); and the Quest Award of the Animal Behavior Society (2012).   She has written several books, including Developmental Plasticity and Evolution, winner of the 2003 Hawkins Award of the American Association of Publishers for the outstanding scholarly book of the year.
