UNESCO's Governing Board Indefinitely Suspends Obiang Nguema Mbasogo Life Sciences Research Prize
June 2010 In May 2010 the H.R. Network’s Executive Committee joined an international campaign in urging UNESCO’s Director-General to abolish the Obiang Nguema Mbasogo Life Sciences Research Prize. The joint letter said it believes that “the most perfunctory examination of President Obiang's record on human rights and meeting the needs of the people makes it clear that he is cynically attempting to use UNESCO to legitimize his abusive regime.” UNESCO suspended the award in October 2010.
