Indian Pediatrician Binayak Sen Wins New York Academy of Sciences Human Rights Award The CHR is pleased that one of its longstanding cases—Indian pediatrician Binayak Sen—was selected by the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) to receive the 2011 Heinz R. Pagels Human Rights of Scientists Award. The CHR and the H.R. Network have closely monitored new developments in Dr. Sen’s case since adopting it in 2007. Dr. Sen was nominated for the NYAS award by former CHR Chair Torsten Wiesel, one of 48 Nobel Laureates who issued a joint appeal in Dr. Sen’s behalf. Dr. Sen’s acceptance speech was read aloud by his friend and colleague, Dr. Mary Ganguli, at the awards ceremony on September 22, 2011.
