Academia Sinica Hosts H.R. Network's Tenth Biennial Meeting in Taiwan
On May 23-26, 2012, the H.R. Network held its 10th biennial meeting in Taipei, Taiwan, hosted by the Academia Sinica. The first day’s symposium, Science and Human Rights: A Crucial Alliance, included a keynote address by Network Executive Committee Member Abdallah Daar (Oman/Canada) and the Max Perutz Memorial Lecture by Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters member Erling Norrby.
Meeting participants, met to discuss the role of the Network, its accomplishments, current cases demanding immediate attention, and potential future endeavors. During the workshop on the second and third days, it was agreed, among other things, that the Network Executive Committee should issue a public statement regarding the plight of 20 unjustly charged Bahraini medics, a public letter of appeal to Bahraini King Hammad Al-Khalifa, and a public appeal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to respect medical neutrality.
The meeting concluded with a consciousness-raising session for graduate students
in the sciences. Speakers discussed the connection between respect for human rights and the conduct of science as well as several current issues of consequence to science and human rights.
The 11th Biennial meeting will be hosted in 2014
by the Academy of Science of Costa Rica.
