In Memory of Sidney Verba, Former CHR Chair
The Committee on Human Rights (CHR) is saddened to learn about the passing of National Academy of Sciences member Sidney Verba. Dr. Verba served as the CHR’s Chair from 2008 to 2014 and was a longtime human rights advocate. During his tenure, he oversaw the Committee’s efforts to help gain the release of several hundred unjustly imprisoned colleagues in the sciences, engineering, and medicine. The CHR at this time also issued a report on the findings of its human rights mission to Turkey, and compiled and submitted information about more than 500 colleagues detained or killed since the start of the Syrian civil war to a newly created United Nations Commission of Inquiry. Dr. Verba, who was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1983, was a renowned political scientist who spent the last 35 years of his career at Harvard University as University Professor of Government and Director of its Library.
