In recent years, the CHR has worked to broaden awareness of the connections between human rights and science, engineering, and medicine. As part of that effort, the committee has increased engagement with law schools, including through an ongoing project involving law students at Case Western Reserve University. Since June of this year, law students at Case Western have been assisting the CHR by researching cases involving scientists and public health experts throughout the world who have come under attack due to their involvement in COVID-19 response efforts. The students have also gathered information about attacks on medics treating protesters in the United States and are currently collaborating with the CHR on submissions to international human rights complaint bodies. This project, which arose from Case Western’s search for meaningful research experiences for its law students during the pandemic, has provided the students with an opportunity to explore the application of international human rights law to real world situations, while also allowing the CHR to expand and increase its advocacy program. |
