Statement by family of Saad Eddin Ibrahim

February 7, 2002

Saad walked out of Tora Mazraa prison at about 6:30 pm today, looking dazed and happy. The release of the other five defendants has been promised by authorities tomorrow. His first wish is to take the family to his desert farm, away from cameras and telephones. Early next week he will undergo further medical tests in Cairo.

We cannot begin to thank all those who have written, lobbied, and otherwise shown us support over the past long months. Everyone deserves to share in this day of good news for Egypt and the cause of justice.

The following article gets a few facts wrong (the Ibn Khaldun trial was in a State Security not a military court, etc.). More will follow.
