Integrated Computational Materials Engineering: Development of a Roadmap for a Grand Challenge in Materials
The committee will conduct an independent review to identify critical paths forward and propose a strategy to facilitate innovation in the interdisciplinary field of computational materials engineering; improve knowledge sharing among researchers, developers, and designers across the research programs supported by the federal government; and identify the challenges associated with gaps in knowledge and understanding.
Sponsor: Department of Defense, DOE- FreedomCAR and Vehicle Technologies, National Nuclear Security Administration

Review of the Federal Strategy to Address Environmental, Health, and Safety Research Needs for Engineered Nanoscale Materials
The committee will review the draft document entitled "Federal Strategy for Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Research Needs for Engineered Nanoscale Materials," which is expected to be publicly released by the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative in September 2007. This committee will plan a workshop and evaluate the scientific and technical aspects of the draft strategy and comment in general terms on how this strategy will develop information needed to support the EHS risk assessment and risk management needs with respect to nanomaterials. In its evaluation the committee will take into consideration the report, Environmental, Health, and Safety Research Needs for Engineered Nanoscale Materials (NSET, 2006) and other governmental and non-governmental reviews identifying EHS research priorities. This is a joint project with Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology
Sponsor: National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO).

Understanding the Impact of Selling the Helium Reserve
A committee will assess the impact of selling the Federal Helium Reserve It will review the report "The Impact of Selling the Federal Helium Reserve" (NAP, 2000); examine the availability and reliability of worldwide helium supply, technical opportunities to increase that supply and the relationships among supply, demand, and market price; assess the current and projected helium marketplace; assess the role that organizational and financial factors play in meeting the goals of the Federal Helium Program ; and identify measures that would enable the Program to respond more effectively to the dynamics of the helium industry. This is a joint project with the Board on Physics and Astronomy
