A National Academies committee has prepared an interim report as part of its study of the causes of the Deepwater Horizon rig incident to identify measures for preventing similar incidents in the future. The committee has developed preliminary findings and observations on various actions and decisions made just prior to the incident, including cementing operations, well monitoring, and well control actions. The report also considers management of operations and oversight and regulation.
These briefings were for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on November 17, 2010 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
