Evaluation of Quantification of Margins and Uncertainties Methodology
for Assessing and Certifying the Reliability of the Nuclear Stockpile
Requested by Congress in P.L. 109-364, this new report from the National Academies reviews the Quantification of Margins and Uncertainties framework, one of the processes used by the National Nuclear Security Administration to monitor the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. The report evaluates how the framework is used by national security laboratories and whether its use in assessing reliable replacement warheads could reduce instances of underground nuclear testing.
This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on November 11, 2008 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
