Requested by the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on House Administration, which is responsible for oversight of the Smithsonian Institution -- the body which administers the National Zoological Park and the Conservation and Research Center (CRC) -- this interim report examines animal care and management at the National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C. in the wake of a series of untimely animal deaths. A final report is expected to be released in the summer of 2004.

These series of briefings were for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on February 25, 2004 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
