Requested by Congress in PL106-346, this report assesses whether the static stability factor (SSF) accurately measures a vehicle's propensity to roll over by comparing the SSF to real-world crash data. The report also comments on the extent to which consumers considering vehicle purchases are able to interpret and use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's star rating system for rollover resistance.
An interim letter report was released on July 23, 2001 and can be found on the Transportation Research Board's Web page.
