Description and Analysis of the VA National Formulary

This new report, from a committee of the Institute of Medicine, describes the VA National Formulary, analyzes its effects on costs and quality of care, compares it to formularies in other private and public sector health systems (for example, managed care organizations and Medicaid), and reviews its restrictiveness. The report, entitled Description and Analysis of the VA National Formulary, also contains information and analyses of formularies (lists of drugs) and formulary systems (management of those lists) in general as pharmacy benefits management tools.

This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on June 7, 2000 and is available online through the Web site of the National Academies Press.
