The Disposition Dilemma:
Controlling the Release of Solid Materials
from Nuclear Regulatory Commission-Licensed Facilities

by

Richard S. Magee, Vice President, Carmagen Engineering, Inc., and Technical Director, New Jersey Corporation for Advanced Technology, Rockaway, NJ and Chair, Committee on Alternatives for Controlling the Release of Solid Materials from Nuclear Regulatory Commission-Licensed Facilities, Board on Energy and Environmental Systems, National Research Council

Undertaken at the request of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, this new study by the National Academies' National Research Council assessed whether changes to the decision-making process for disposition of slightly radioactive solid material were needed and determined whether sufficient technical information exists to establish a consistent system nationally. The report also offers a decision-making framework, intended for use as a policy-making tool, which incorporates the need to assess health, economic, and environmental impacts, among other factors.

This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on March 12, 2002 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
