If potassium iodide is taken soon enough after a nuclear accident -- or possibly a terrorist attack -- it can prevent the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine, which causes thyroid cancer. This report, requested by Congress in PL107-188, advises the Bush administration on the development of a plan to stockpile potassium iodide tablets and distribute them in the event of an emergency.
