Distribution and Administration of Potassium Iodide
in the Event of a Nuclear Incident

If potassium iodide is taken soon enough after a nuclear accident -- or possibly a terrorist attack -- it can prevent the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine, which causes thyroid cancer. This report, requested by Congress in PL107-188, advises the Bush administration on the development of a plan to stockpile potassium iodide tablets and distribute them in the event of an emergency.

These series of briefings were for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on December 4, 2003 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
