A new report from the Institute of Medicine, ENDING NEGLECT: THE ELIMINATION OF TUBERCULOSIS IN THE UNITED STATES, reviews the current state of tuberculosis mortality, morbidity, and prevention/control efforts in the United States; lays out an action plan to accelerate the decline in new cases; and proposes a set of recommendations for local, state, and federal governments as well as the private sector. Finally, the report recommends a more active involvement by the United States in the global tuberculosis control effort.

This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on May 4, 2000 and is available online through the Web site of the National Academies Press.
