Enhancing Food Safety:
The Role of the Food and Drug Administration
Recent outbreaks of foodborne diseases prompted Congress, in P.L. 110-161, to request a comprehensive study of gaps in our food safety system. This report, produced jointly by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, presents legislative, regulatory, and administrative recommendations, and their cost estimates.
These series of briefings were for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on June 8, 2010 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
