Requested by Congress in P.L. 111-8, this study builds on the recommendations of a previous report, assessing both the potential and merits of developing a standardized front-label food guidance system that would be regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. It also reviews the effectiveness of various icons and rating systems in influencing consumers’ understanding and behavior.
This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on October 20, 2011 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
