Health IT and Patient Safety:
Building Safer Systems for Better Care
This new report from the Institute of Medicine explores how the use of health information technology (IT), such as electronic health records, affects the safety of patient care. It recommends steps to improve transparency in the reporting of health IT safety incidents and to enhance monitoring of health IT products, both of which can lead to improved care.
These series of briefings were for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on November 8, 2011 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
