The Healthcare Imperative:
Lowering Costs and Improving Outcomes: Workshop Series Summary
This summary of three evidence-based medicine Roundtable workshops on lowering health care costs identifies a number of factors driving expenditure growth including scientific uncertainty, perverse economic and practice incentives, system fragmentation, lack of patient involvement, and under-investment in population health. Experts discuss key levers for catalyzing transformation of the delivery system. A few include streamlined health insurance regulation, administrative simplification and clarification and quality and consistency in treatment.
This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on December 16, 2009 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
