Observations on the President's Fiscal Year 2002
Federal Science and Technology Budget

This new report is the fourth in a series of annual analyses that track trends in federal funding of science and technology research programs and facilities. It also calls attention to issues of concern to the scientific and engineering communities.

and

Trends in Federal Support of Research and Graduate Education

Recent shifts in federal agencies' research budgets have prompted concerns about spending imbalances among various fields and the consequences of such disparities. This comprehensive report examines trends in federal support of basic and applied research in 21 fields of science and engineering over the past decade. It also looks at the relationship between federal research investments and graduate-school enrollment. Additionally, the report discusses trends in research investments by states, philanthropic organizations, and the private sector.

These series of briefings were for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The two reports were publicly released on July 11, 2001 and can be found, in their entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press via the following links.
