One Step at a Time: The Staged Development of Geologic Repositories for High-Level Radioactive Waste

At the request of the Department of Energy, this National Research Council report presents recommendations on how to design and operate a system for disposing of radioactive waste in stages, with scientific experiments to test the safety and effectiveness of each step taken. It also focuses on how such a system could be used at underground facilities such as the one at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

These series of briefings were for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on February 6, 2003 and can be found, in full text, on the National Academy Press Web

site.
