An Evaluation of the Food Safety Requirements
of the Federal Purchase Ground Beef Program
This new report, from the National Academies, assesses the food safety measures required of suppliers to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) ground beef purchase program and recommends how AMS could perform future periodic evaluations of the program. AMS purchases and distributes food for the federal food and nutrition programs, including the National School Lunch Program.
This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on December 9, 2010 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
