Testing Teacher Candidates: The Role of Licensure Tests in Improving Teacher Quality

This new report from the National Research Council's Committee on Assessment and Teacher Quality examines the reliability and technical quality of teacher-licensure tests and whether results from these tests should be used to evaluate how well states and colleges prepare prospective teachers. The report also looks at alternative approaches for assessing the competence of aspiring teachers.

A series of briefings for this report was held for members of Congress and congressional staff only on March 26, 2001. The report was publicly released on March 27, 2001 and can be read online through the National Academy Press.
