[1] Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program Entering its 10th Year.
The Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program enters its 10th year. The National Academies will host three 10-week sessions in 2006 beginning in January, June, and September.
The Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program of the National Academies is designed to engage graduate science, engineering, medical, veterinary, business, and law students in the analysis that informs the creation of science and technology policy and to familiarize them with the interactions of science, technology, and government. As a result, students develop essential skills different from those attained in academia and make the transition from being a graduate student to a professional.
- program takes place over a 10-period. Some examples of the type of activities the fellow do while at the National Academies include:
- Developing an outline of themes of leading research in remote sensing applications;
- Analyzing how other think tanks and research organizations use the web to communicate research results and other science news to the media and the public;
- Developing a workshop on how scientists in developing countries can take better advantage of the new wireless communication networks to gain access to the Internet and to the WWW;
- Preparing a background paper on the current state of knowledge about the demography of street-children, and what is known about the cost and effectiveness of existing programs to help streetchildren and orphans in the U.S. and abroad.
Following a week-long orientation, the fellows continue their training and educational experience with a variety of weekly events such as lunches with each of the three Academies presidents, field trips, educational briefings, as well as planning and hosting a seminar on a controversial science and technology policy issue. Furthermore, fellows are encouraged to independently seek educational activities outside the National Academies. These activities can include observing congressional hearings, seminars at other think tanks, and shadowing federal officials or others involved in S&T policy to observe their activities.
The fellows overall educational activities encompass all of these activities as well as their activities within their program unit.
