The deadline for receipt of materials (application and at least one reference) is November 1 for the January program, March 1 for the June program, and June 1 for the September program. Incomplete applications cannot be considered.
Steps to Apply Online:
1. Review Meet Former Fellows, FAQs, and the Application Form. Begin thinking about who you will ask for a reference(s). References may be submitted in advance of the application form.
2. Click on units in Fellow Opportunities Chart and decide what opportunities are right for you.
3. Fill out the Application Form.
4. Request at least one professor/mentor/adviser to fill out a Reference Form. Note: a reference can be submitted in advance of the application.
The application process is now complete.
What are the 10 steps I should undertake in filling out the application form?
1. Review the, Frequently Asked Questions, and Application Form to determine if a National Academies’ fellowship is right for you.
2. If so, review the Fellow Opportunities Chart and link to the divisions and units within it to identify and determine the units where you are interested in being a fellow.
3. Review the Meet Former Fellows to gain a better understanding of the type of educational and training activities that fellow alumni participated in while at the National Academies.
4. Email alumni who did their fellowship in units you are interested in or who have a personal connection (e.g., went to the same school) to get their thoughts.
5. Repeat this for several units, so that you have a minimum of three and a maximum of five choices. It is recommended that you select 5 units on application indicating why you want to be a fellow with this unit.
6. Write brief paragraphs as to why you are interested in working at each unit in a wordprocessing program for ease of editing/spellchecking.
7.Review the writing sample questions on the application form and develop brief paragraphs for each of these in a wordprocesing program. Because of formatting limitations within the form, to ensure paragraph breaks, you may wish to include two hard return codes (example

) at the end of each paragraph.
8. You are now ready to fill out the application form and be sure to cut and past your answers from the wordprocessing program into the form where appropriate. Note that your application can be saved and then revised prior to submission.
9. Review to make sure that all sections are complete and then activate the application.
10. Contact your mentor/professor/adviser and ask them to fill out the online reference form. Send your mentor the link early in the process to ensure receipt before the application deadline.
