Quantitative Panel

The task of this panel was the identification of measures of scholarly productivity, educational environment, and student and faculty characteristics. They also explored effective methods for collecting data for these measures. In particular the following items were addressed:

The identification of scholarly productivity measures using publication and citation data and the fields for which the measures are appropriate.
The identification of measures that relate scholarly productivity to research funding data, and the investigation of sources for research funding data.
How can data on fellowships, awards, and honors be used and for what fields are data in this area appropriate?
What aspects of the research infrastructure, such as space, library facilities, and computing facilities, are appropriate measures?
What demographic data on faculty and students should be collected and used?
What characteristics of the graduate educational environment, such as graduate student support, completion rates, time to degree, and attrition, could be used to assess research-doctorate programs, and for what fields are they appropriate?
What measures of scholarly productivity can be used in arts and humanities?
What other quantitative measures should be used and what new data sources are available?
