Qualifications For Official Service Retirement

  • You formally notified the National Academies of your intent to retire.
  • You were age 60 or older on the date of your retirement.
  • For retiree life insurance benefits, you had completed at least 5 years of service with the National Academies at the date of your retirement.
  • For spouse, domestic partner or dependent health insurance benefits, you must elect to enroll your family members at the time you retire. If you waive this coverage, it cannot be restored.

What If You Are Not Yet Age 60?
You may resign at age 58 ½ and continue your active employee health insurance benefits through
COBRA until age 60 if you have at least 5 years of service as a benefit eligible employee. Please see Health Insurance Options If You Are Transitioning To Retirement Using COBRA.

  • At age 60 you may convert to SERVICE RETIREE status and elect retiree health insurance benefits.
  • To preserve your SERVICE RETIREE life insurance benefits, you must have completed at least 5 years of service prior to your date of resignation.
