If Your Spouse Retired Before 1979	Each retiree prior to 1979 had an individual retirement arrangement with the National Academies. Surviving Spouse Assistance & Referral Services	All surviving spouses of official SERVICE RETIREES who completed at least 5 years of service prior to their date of retirement and their family members are eligible for Surviving Spouse Assistance. This benefit is provided through INOVA Assistance. The National Academies provide surviving spouse assistance and referral service, which offers help to surviving spouse regarding relationships, stresses, alcohol & drug dependency and emotional concerns as well as dependent and elder care referrals.
