If You Are Eligible For Medicare Benefits
Medicare provides the foundation for your surviving spouse health care options. Medicare supplement health insurance programs offer benefits and services beyond those covered by Medicare
As a surviving spouse, you have a choice of Medicare supplement health insurance programs. Any eligible family member must elect the same health care program.
When you become eligible for Medicare, you must sign up for Medicare Part A and B and pay for Medicare Part B. The National Academies offer surviving spouse health insurance coverage that provides benefits after Medicare pays its portion.
Kaiser Permanente, HMO health insurance option supplemental to Medicare. As a health maintenance organization, Kaiser offers integrated medical, prescription drug, vision and dental benefits through Kaiser providers and facilities. You must live in the HMO service area, to elect this option. You must go to a Kaiser doctor, hospital or health care provider.

AARP Health Care Options, 10 plans for surviving spouses supplemental to Medicare. Plan J is the most comprehensive coverage offered and is the only AARP plan subsidized by the National Academies. This plan has an annual AARP membership due of $12.50 per household. You may go to any doctor, hospital, or other health care provider who accepts Medicare.
