Benefits offered to surviving spouses of official SERVICE RETIREE are based on the retiree’s date of retirement and length of service with the National Academies and the surviving spouse’s eligibility for Medicare.
As a surviving spouse or domestic partner, if the retiree did not enroll you in health insurance upon retirement and continuously maintain that coverage until death, you are not eligible for health insurance coverage.

All surviving spouses of official SERVICE RETIREES who completed at least 5 years of service prior to their date of retirement and their family members are eligible for Surviving Spouse Assistance. This benefit is provided through INOVA Assistance.
The National Academies provide surviving spouse assistance and referral service, which offers help to surviving spouse regarding relationships, stresses, alcohol & drug dependency and emotional concerns as well as dependent and elder care referrals.
This benefit provides completely confidential assistance with 24-hour telephone access to professional counselors.

As an eligible surviving spouse of an official SERVICE RETIREE you are eligible for surviving spouse medical benefits as long as you continuously maintain this coverage. You have 30 days to elect this coverage from the date of death of your spouse.
The National Academies provide a choice of health insurance options for surviving spouses. If you waive this benefit at anytime it cannot be reinstated.
