BOARD ON SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND ECONOMIC POLICY

500 Fifth Street, 574 Keck Center, N.W., Washington, DC 20001

The Globalization of Innovation: Emerging Trends in IT, Biopharma, and Finance

April 20, 2007
Washington, DC

To better understand the changing terms of global competition at the industry and firm levels, the National Academies'  Science, Technology, and Economic Policy (STEP) Board has commissioned papers on
11 industries ranging from semiconductors to biotechnology to venture capital. They are concentrated in 3 sectors -- information technology (software as well as hardware), life sciences-based industries, and financial services.   The authors are academics affiliated with Sloan Foundation-funded research and teaching centers at various universities; and the focus of their research has been on geographical shifts in the locus of innovative activity -- the development, commercialization, and diffusion of new products and processes.

To test their findings, project current trends into the future (or identify other emerging trends), and explore their implications for public policy, the STEP Board is organizing a conference in Washington, DC on Friday, April 20, 2007.  In addition to the paper authors, the principal participants will be industrial managers, consultants, forecasters, scientists and technologists, investors and other accustomed to thinking about future business and technical opportunities and risks and the policy environment affecting them. The meeting, beginning at 8:30 AM in the Lecture Room of the National Academies' headquarters (2100 C Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., 20037) will be organized in sessions focused on the three sectors.

Subject to strict space limitations, the meeting will be open to those who register.

A preliminary agenda and the commissioned papers will be available by March 16, 2007. Industries studied:  semiconductors, personal computers, software, displays, solid state lighting, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, logistics, automobiles, financial services, and venture capital.
