U.S. Industry in 2000: Studies in Competitive Performance

U.S. industry faced a gloomy outlook in the 1980s. Industrial performance improved in the 1990s and continues to look bright today. Studies by leading scholars of eleven manufacturing and service industries examine the factors behind the resurgence and assess its durability.

Securing America's Industrial Strength

A companion volume presenting the conclusions of the STEP Board from the industry studies and related work on tax policy, venture capital, and innovation indicators. The report reviews patterns of corporate strategy and restructuring and considers the role of monetary and fiscal policies as well as trade, regulatory, and intellectual property policies. It presents new evidence of trends in public and private R&D spending and outlines a policy agenda for the next decade.
